National Grassroots Innovation and Outstanding Traditional Knowledge Award
The National Innovation Foundation (NIF)-India, functioning as an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, extends an invitation for submissions of unaided technological innovations and traditional knowledge originating at the grassroots level. This call is open to both individuals (Citizens of India) and groups who have developed innovative solutions independently.
The innovations may span various domains such as agriculture, health, energy, household or utility, transportation, livestock, etc. The focus is on creations that contribute to the reduction of drudgery, livelihood enhancement, development of plant varieties, herbal remedies for human/animal/farming challenges, or the introduction of any other low-cost sustainable green technologies. Crucially, these innovations should be self-initiated and self-executed, devoid of technical support from external agencies.
The scope of submissions includes not only tangible prototypes but also creative ideas for innovative technologies and techniques that address persistent societal issues. Even if these ideas have not been translated into prototypes, they are encouraged for submission. The emphasis is on fostering a culture of indigenous innovation and recognizing the ingenuity of individuals or groups making a positive impact at the grassroots level.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Innovators must be above 14 years of age.
  • Only Indian citizens are eligible.
  • Innovations should be unaided, without technical support from external agencies.
  • Open to individuals with varying educational backgrounds, including:
  • Uneducated or school dropouts.
  • School students up to Class 12 or those out of school up to 17-18 years old. ITI
  • /Polytechnic diploma students or diploma holders.
  • Individual innovators with no professional/technical training or science/technology-related education.
  • Individuals affiliated with any formal institution but not engaged in S&T/R&D work.
  • Retired individual innovators with no science/technology-related education and without professional experience in S&T/R&D activities.
  • Ineligible categories include:
  • Students enrolled in professional courses like engineering, medical, pharmacy, etc., and professional graduates/postgraduates.
  • Individuals affiliated with formal institutions engaged in S&T/Technical or R&D work.
  • Self-employed well-qualified individuals, professional freelancers.
  • Retired persons with professional S&T/Technical or R&D work experience.
  • Special Encouragement:
  • Girls, women, differently-abled individuals, and those from disadvantaged sections of society, backward, and remote regions are encouraged to apply, provided they meet other eligibility criteria.

  • Selection Process
    Screening of Nominations:
  • Initial scrutiny for eligibility and completeness of information.
  • Ineligible nominations will be intimated.
  • Eligible but incomplete nominations will be requested to provide detailed technical information, including photos and videos.
  • Novelty Review:
  • Review of all eligible and complete nominations for the degree of novelty.
  • Innovations lacking novelty or deemed common will not proceed.
  • Innovators of such entries will be informed of the decision.
  • Scientific Validation:
  • Innovations passing the novelty stage will undergo scientific validation.
  • Validation involves collaboration with designated laboratories, centers, institutions, and universities.
  • Some categories, such as plant varieties or herbal technologies, may require a longer validation period.
  • Nominations with positive validation reports will proceed to the next stage.
  • Selection and Shortlisting:
  • Validated innovations will be presented to a committee of experts.
  • The expert committee, consisting of eminent individuals from different institutions, will scrutinize the documents and assign marks based on set criteria.
  • The committee will recommend a list of awardees based on the evaluation process.
  • Award Consideration:
  • Awardees will be finalized based on the recommendations of the expert committee.
  • In cases where validation takes time, nominations may be considered for subsequent competitions after positive validation reports are received.
  • The three-tiered process ensures a thorough evaluation, involving both technical scrutiny and expert judgment, to recognize and award deserving grassroots innovations and outstanding traditional knowledge.
